Working methods for student communication

KTH have a common approach to student communication. The aim is to facilitate students with correct, consistent and useful study information. Here are important starting points in the work as well as checklists, templates and guides.

Correct, consistent and useful information

KTH will work to ensure that the communication is:

  • correct and up-to-date
  • useful - the information should help students achieve their goals easily and smoothly.
  • accessible - as many people as possible should be able to access the information
  • consistent - students should recognise themselves from other study situations at KTH.
  • clear - the student should know what is expected after reading the information.
  • coherent with other information at KTH

Study with insights into student needs

Clear roles of responsibility

KTH has clear role descriptions of the responsibilities and training required for the roles of content manager, web editor (Studentwebben) and programme room editor (Canvas).

The head of the relevant business area appoints these people. For the programme rooms, this means those responsible for education administration (UA).

Channels and services with different purposes

KTH has a concept about how different services and channels should be used and linked together.

Personalised menu

The personal menu, which is available throughout and on Canvas when the student has logged in, is the student's entrance to their studies. Here the student gets an overview and with links to their:

  • courses (course PM, syllabus, course room in Canvas)
  • programmes (programme room in Canvas)
  • schedule
  • student services, such as course registration, study results and group room bookings.

Student website and newsletter

The Student Web ( contains study information that is open to everyone:

  • programme plans
  • course syllabis, course PMs, course analyses, historical documentation about the course
  • information about studying at KTH, support and guidance, IT and digital services, contact information.
  • programme-specific information that should be accessible to everyone (e.g. contact details, study abroad).

Based on the content of the Student Web, newsletters are sent out once a month to all students, reminding them of news, important dates and tips with links to the Student Web.

Course room in Canvas

Students who are registered for a course round automatically get access to the corresponding course room in Canvas. The course room gathers:

  • course material
  • hand-in assignments
  • any quizzes
  • communication between teachers and students

The student is referred to the course PM for information on the course objectives, learning activities, preparation, details on examination and contacts. The student is referred to the Student Web for common information on, for example, course registration, registration for courses within the programme and examination.

Programme room in Canvas

Students who are registered on a programme automatically get access to the corresponding programme room in Canvas. The programme room is closed and can only be accessed by students on the programme. The programme room collects:

  • programme-specific information that should only be available to the programme's students
  • links to the Student Web related to the programme studies
  • important deadlines and information sessions
  • files from the programme
  • communication between programme management and students

Students are referred to the programme syllabus for information on the objectives, scope and content of the programme, selection principles, implementation, possible specialisations and degree titles. The student is referred to the Student Web for common information about studies at KTH.
