The European railway system of 2050: What is needed and how can Shift2Rail contribute?
Most people agree that railways have an important role to play in a future sustainable transport system. Rail transport has a number of system inherent advantages like low energy usage and high transport capacity.
However, there is also a common perception that the full potential of rail transport is not used today. The European Commission is pushing for a change in the European transport system, by funding the large research programme Shift2Rail. This programme has been running for some years, and is right now planning for a possible continuation. As part of this the railway community is developing visions for how a railway system of the future as a backbone of the transport system could look like.

The spring seminar of the KTH Railway Group will look towards Europe this year. Presentations include the two largest European train operators as well as two major rolling stock suppliers. Vision documents that are developed by the European Rail Research Advisory Council (ERRAC) – both for 2030 and 2050 - will be resented and exemplified. Examples from both passenger and freight transport will be given. Results from current Shift2Rail projects are presented and we will finish by introducing a possible solution for real ntermodal transport. As usual, after the presentations there will be time for discussion with all presenters, first in a panel discussion and then during mingle.
