Multiple languages
In most cases, your content needs to be in both Swedish and English. Plan for a translation when you produce your material.
Should the text be in both Swedish and English? KTH, as an authority, is obliged to have some types of information at least in Swedish. Information aimed at both Swedish and non-Swedish speakers should be available in both languages.
Remember not to mix languages in the same structure. This becomes inconsistent for users and makes the content less accessible.
Working with multiple languages in Polopoly
When working with multilingual content in the Polopoly publishing tool, there are two main ways to handle this.
For example, you want to create a teaser for a page available in both Swedish and English. In that case, you can choose between the following options:
- Option 1: Separate teasers for each language. You create a Swedish teaser on the Swedish page and an English teaser on the English page. The teasers are entirely independent of each other and are unaffected if the others are changed or deleted.
- Option 2: Linked teasers. First, create a Swedish teaser on the Swedish page, then an English-language version of the teaser, and finally copy the teaser to the English page. The teasers are then linked – changes or deletions to one affect the other.
Which option you should choose depends on the content:
- If the content is to differ between languages, option 1 is preferable.
- If the content is to be identical, for example, a contact list or general information, option 2 is usually better as it reduces duplication of work in future updates.
Choose your method carefully – it saves time, reduces the risk of errors and makes maintenance much easier.
