Hello, Erik Svärd, safety specialist at the KTH Safety Department. You are the course coordinator for a new fire safety training course that is mandatory for all new employees. Tell us more!

“It is a basic training on KTH's fire procedures and is to be generally used in our office environment. The aim is to provide everyone with the knowledge and information they need, in order to be confident about what to do in the event of a fire and to contribute to a fire-safe working environment. The course also provides information about the new evacuation organisation.

What is the new evacuation organisation?

“What is new is that anyone can take on the role of evacuation leader if necessary. The first person to reach the evacuation vest is the evacuation leader. Of course, this requires employees to familiarise themselves with what this responsibility entails. This is taught in the course, and action cards help the evacuation leader.

Where can I find an evacuation vest and action cards?

“KTH is working to ensure that all fire-fighting and evacuation equipment is collected along the evacuation routes. There will be vests and action cards for the evacuation leader. There will also be an evacuation plan showing the routes out of the building. There will also often be fire extinguishers and a fire alarm button, in case that the fire alarm needs to be manually activated.

How do I know what to do if there is a fire?

“If you see or smell smoke from a fire, you should act according to KTH's fire procedure: Save - Warn - Alert - Extinguish - Evacuate. KTH has published Safety at KTH, which contains instructions and checklists for everyone to use in the event of various serious incidents. It contains instructions on what everyone should do in the event of fire, alarm or smoke. Safety at KTH  is available on the intranet and at all workplaces.
