Evacuation Leader

Below is a description of an evacuation leader’s tasks.

Purpose

The purpose of this function page is to list the tasks of an evacuation leader.

Extent

This functional description applies to all of KTH, however school/organization specific descriptions that add extra tasks may also exist.

Task

Within KTH's operations, anyone onsite can act as an evacuation leader in case of emergency.

In the event of a fire or other hazard requiring evacuation, the employee who arrives first at the evacuation leader vest located in the immediate area or premises is encouraged to put it on and follow the instructions on the action card located by the vest.

It is important that everyone takes responsibility for their evacuation and follows the evacuation leader's instructions immediately.

In the event of an evacuation, it is the evacuation leader's task to search neighboring premises and spaces and to inform people to evacuate the building and relocate to the assembly point.

In the case of a lecture, the person leading the lecture automatically assumes the evacuation leader role.

Instructions on the action card are as follows:

  • Put on the evacuation leader vest
  • Initiate evacuation of the building
  • Search nearby rooms and spaces including toilets and rest areas for
    remaining individuals
  • Assist and guide individuals through the nearest smoke-free evacuation route
    to the designated assembly point
  • Assist at entrances in directing individuals to the assembly point
  • Report to emergency personnel or the fire safety officer if anyone is still
    in the building
  • Contribute with calmness at the assembly point.
  • Announce the return to the premises ONLY following permission from the fire rescue leader or fire safety officer
