Recruitment and admission

Before a position for a doctoral studentship can be advertised and a doctoral student be recruited at CBH, an approval for the establishment of a study place — so‑called Green Light — is required.

A financial plan must be attached to the Green Light application. If a licentiate student is to be recruited, an additional appendix with a motivation for the intended degree is required.

The Green Light form must be reviewed well in advance of the planned announcement. The Head of Department and the Director of Third-Cycle Education review and sign it, after which the Head of School decides on “Green Light” for recruitment. The signed form should be submitted to the HR officer responsible for the advertisement. HR registers the form and informs the supervisor and the SSG about the decision.

Required documents

Admission step by step

  • Complete the Green Light form (providing brief information on how necessary resources have been secured, e.g. supervision, project, study environment, need for ethical permits, etc.)

  • Attach financial plan: contact your financial officer  (or vs-ekonomi@cbh.kth.se ) to prepare a calculation (Appendix 1)

  • If needed: attach motivation for recruiting a licentiate student (Appendix 2)

Recruitment

Co-advertising of doctoral student positions  is made nine times per year. Advertisement material is submitted to HR. When the application period has closed, the recruiting supervisor must review if the applicants fulfil the entry requirements  andproduce a list of candidates who meet the eligibility requirements and can proceed to further assessment.

Decision on admission to doctoral studies

Admission to doctoral studies is required in order to be employed as a doctoral student and must be completed before a contract can be signed and studies begin. When the application period has closed and the supervisor has selected an eligible candidate: contact the doctoral education administrator at phdadmin@cbh.kth.se .

A residence permit is required for all non‑EU/EEA citizens, and must be issued before the person arrives in Sweden. For an estimate of the processing time, see Time to decision (MIG) . According to KTH’s guidelines for doctoral education, an admitted doctoral student must take up their study place within three months of the admission date. A doctoral student applying for a residence permit must take up the study place within one year.

Decision on employment or equivalent

  • Only an admitted student can be employed as a doctoral student

  • If a residence permit is needed it be issued before the student can begin studies

Industry employed doctoral students  and students with external scholarships  are not employed by KTH, and special agreements must be prepared for these cases. Information about contract management at CBH can be found here .

A good start – establish an Individual Study Plan (ISP)

An initial ISP must be created within one month and approved by the FA/vice FA within three months after the start of studies. The principal supervisor is responsible for creating the first ISP .
