Congratulations Fatemeh Ghasemifard!

Best PhD Thesis in Antennas & Propagation in Europe

Published Mar 25, 2020

Fatemeh Ghasemifard, a former doctoral student at the Division of Electromagnetic Engineering (EME), EECS, has been awarded the “EurAAP Per-Simon Kildal Award” for best PhD Thesis in Antennas & Propagation in Europe.

How does it feel to receive the award?

”I am honoured that I attracted the attention of the prominent scientists at the EurAAP Per-Simon Kildal Award committee to my scientific research work and thrilled to receive this prestigious award in Antennas & Propagation in Europe.

I am delighted that I could play a role in presenting another example of a successful woman in science and technology to motivate women’s participation in this area.

I am also grateful to all the people who supported me during my doctoral studies, especially my wonderful supervisors Professor Oscar Quevedo-Teruel, Professor Martin Norgren, and Professor Guido Valerio.”

Briefly, what is your research about?

”My research is, to a large extent, a combination of mathematical modelling, physical analysis and demonstration of potential applications of a special type of periodic structures (a.k.a. metamaterials) called higher-symmetric periodic structures.

In fact, by proposing a mathematical analysis, I presented the physical insight into these structures and demonstrated their potential to realise cost-effective and high-efficient antenna systems at Super-High Frequencies (SHF).

These antennas can be applied in the new generation of Mobile Telecommunications (5G), as well as Space Communications.”

What excites you about your research?

”I can identify several factors that makes my research very enjoyable. First and foremost, I was enthusiastic about working on a novel phenomenon that can be applied in future technologies. It was an outstanding experience conducting a multidimensional research that was a combination of science and engineering.

It was also a great experience working at KTH, one of the best universities in the world with an extensive collaboration with industry. Especially, collaborating with a highly qualified and supportive research group at KTH motivates me to put an extra effort into my research.

Last but not least, the ambition of representing a successful woman in science and technology has always inspired me to conduct my research with excellent quality.”
