We have spoken to two new co-workers at the Division of Electric Power and Energy Systems (EPE) Mariana Dalarsson, Assistant Professor and Qianwen Xu, Assistant Professor.

Hi Mariana Dalarsson! Please tell us, what is your area of research and tell us something we didn’t know about your research field?

”During my research career I pursued three main research directions which include (1) studies of wave propagation through graded interfaces between materials, (2) microwave diagnostics methods for electric power equipment and (3) studies of using microwave radiation on human tissue with gold nanoparticles for medical treatment. I have defined the first research direction myself and have been pursuing it during my entire career. The second research direction was the topic of my PhD thesis at KTH. The first two research directions are therefore well known at KTH. The third research direction is a new fascinating application of electromagnetic theory to important medical applications, which is generally new to my new and old colleagues at KTH.”

What are your expectations of working at KTH?

”Even though I am a relatively young faculty member, I have a history with KTH that goes fourteen years back to the year 2006. But whenever I take a walk on our campus, I still feel the same devotion to and fascination by KTH, as one of the best technical universities in the world. My expectation from working at KTH is to keep and further deepen my ties to our university and our institution. I also hope to be able to further develop my teaching and research abilities in cooperation with my excellent colleagues and our knowledge-seeking students.” 

What message would you like to send to your new KTH colleagues?

”I am happy to be cooperating with old colleagues again, as well as to meet some new ones in our dynamic working place. I will do my best to contribute to the success and excellent reputation of our university and our institution.”  

Hi Qianwen Xu! Please tell us, what is your area of research and give us a few examples of what your research can be used for?

”My research area is about advanced control and stabilization of sustainable power systems and microgrids. With the decarbonisation and digitalisation of the energy sector, I'm devoted to developing advanced methods to address the control, stability and cybersecurity challenges of future sustainable power systems with high penetration of renewables.

My research works can improve the penetration of renewable energy and enhance the system stability and reliability. A few examples include sustainable and secure power supply systems for smart buildings, islands as well as electric transports. The target is to design a cost-effective, secure and 100% renewable energy system for the future climate-neutral society.” 

What are your expectations of working at KTH?

”I'm very proud to be a faculty at this world-leading technical university and having the opportunities to collaborate with so many smart scholars. KTH is very supportive and creates a perfect environment for young faculties to grow up. I will take full advantage of the support of KTH and build a high-level and independent research team to conduct high-impact research on the decarbonisation and digitalization of the energy sector.

Moreover, working with supportive and smart colleagues are really exciting. I expect to collaborate with my colleagues as well as external and industrial collaborators in the research collaboration and funding applications in the future, to together address the challenges and embrace the sustainable and digital future in energy sector.” 

What are you looking forward to most right now?

”Well, lots of things: to continue to conduct high-impact research, to collaborate with smart colleagues, to attract funding and to build my research group. I can't wait to move ahead and I believe it will be a pleasant journey in KTH ahead.”
