USB accessories for Zoom and hybrid rooms
If your laptop only has USB-C ports but the equipment you want to connect has USB-A connectors, you will need a USB adapter or a USB hub. A USB hub also gives you more USB ports, so you can use all your equipment.
USB accessories that help you use more technical equipment
All Zoom and hybrid rooms at KTH are connected with USB-A cables, which is also the most common form of connection for complementary microphones and webcams that you as a teacher may choose to buy.
However, there are different types of USB cables and ports, and if you use additional equipment, it is easy for the USB ports on the computer to run out. In order to be able to use all equipment, you may need an:
- USB-C to USB-A adapter
- USB-hub.
Note: Sometimes USB-A is called USB, USB 2.0 or USB 3.0, but they all fit into the same port and work in the same way.
USB-C to USB-A adapter
If your computer does not have the ability to connect with USB-A, you need an adapter for the type of USB port on your computer, usually USB-C.
An adapter is a cable or a small piece of plastic with a socket of one type at one end and a connection part of the other type at the other end. The adapters are named in the form "X to Y", with the type of cable that is connected to the computer written first and what it translates from last. That is, "USB-C to USB-A adapter" allows a USB-A cable to fit into a USB-C port.
If you are unsure whether you have USB-A or USB-C, please read the page Connect with USB in Zoom and hybrid rooms .
Note: There are USB hubs with a built-in adapter, if you need both an adapter and more ports. Read more below.
USB-hub
The number of USB ports on laptops varies depending on the version and brand, and it is not uncommon for there to be fewer than what is needed. To increase the number of USB ports, you can purchase a USB hub, which also can act as an adapter.
There are many different variants of USB hubs with different connection cables and sockets, so be sure to choose what you need. Make sure the USB hub you choose has:
- the right type of connection cable (USB-A or USB-C)
- the right ports in the right amount.
Some USB hubs have many different ports, but only a few of the kind you need. Please read the specification before purchasing the USB hub.
