Meet Kathlén Kohn, Associate Professor in Mathematics

Congratulations on your appointment as associate professor! How does it feel to be promoted to your new role?
I am super excited about the promotion. Our Department of Mathematics is really a great place to work, with the colleagues around me being strong mathematicians covering a diverse range of mathematics. After 5 years at the department as assistant professor, I am ready to take the next step and I am particularly looking forward to work with many more future PhD students and postdocs.
Can you tell us about your research?
I am an algebraic geometer working within data science and AI. On the one hand, I study the theoretical foundations of neural networks, in particular how changes in the architectural design of networks impact the optimization properties of network training. On the other hand, I investigate 3D reconstruction from images taken by unknown cameras, exploiting the geometry of complex camera models (such as moving rolling-shutter sensors) to find efficient algorithms. Finally, I have also worked on building a bridge between intersection theory and maximum likelihood estimation.
