The ITM school's EGI waste handling procedure, ETT unit

1. Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to describe how waste that occurs at the Applied Thermodynamics and Refrigeration unit (ETT) must be handled according to binding requirements to minimise negative environmental impact.

2. Scope/Delimitation

The ITM school, Department of Energy Technology (EGI) ETT unit, Brinellvägen 80A, SE 114 28 Stockholm. This is a local procedure; refer to KTH's central procedure (Swedish)  for more detailed information.

3. Responsibility

  • The head of school is responsible for ensuring that waste management is controlled and functions within the framework of ITM.
  • The operations controller is responsible for establishing and implementing the procedure.
  • The institute/unit caretaker is responsible for submitting update proposals for the procedure as necessary.
  • ITM employees are responsible for ensuring waste is handled according to established procedures and binding requirements.

4. Implementation

As far as possible, ITM must minimise the amount of waste in the operation. The waste hierarchy must serve as a guide; i.e., we must prevent the occurrence of waste by working according to the following:

  • Minimise the occurrence of waste
  • Reuse materials, equipment, furniture etc.
  • Recycle materials through sorting
  • Recover energy by incinerating household waste
  • Send to refuse dump

All personnel must sort their own waste at the recycling point or designated bins located in the lab. If there is no designated recycling point, contact technical personnel, the chemicals coordinator or the institute/unit caretaker.

  • In this case, put paper in the designated bin for removal to recycling. To be handled by the department's technical personnel who will remove the waste to refuse room B230 order the refuse room at the end of corridor M207 (Brinellvägen 72).
  • Flatten cardboard boxes and place them in refuse room M207, Brinellvägen 72 or in refuse room B230 next to the entrance on Brinellvägen 85.
  • Sort batteries in the recycling point in the lab for removal by technical personnel to refuse room B230 or the refuse room at the end of corridor M207 (Brinellvägen 72).
  • Sort light bulbs in the recycling point at the lab for removal by technical personnel to refuse room B230.
  •  Fluorescent tubes and low-energy lamps to be handled by technical personnel and sorted in refuse room B230 or the refuse room at the end of corridor M207 (Brinellvägen 72).
  • Put toners in copy room K427; to be handled by the IT department.
  • Sort glass in the recycling point at the lab for removal by technical personnel to refuse room B230.
  • Sort electrical equipment and electronics in the recycling point at the lab for removal by technical personnel to refuse room B230.
  • Handle chemicals in consultation with the chemicals coordinator. Central Chemical Procedures (Swedish)
  • Metals to be collected and removed for recycling by technical personnel.
  • Technical personnel to collect plastic and soft plastic and sort it in refuse room B230 or in the refuse room at the end of corridor M207 (Brinellvägen 72).
  • Containers for food waste are in the cupboards under the sink in the kitchen at ETT. The janitors empty and throw in the garbage room M207 on Brinellvägen 72.
  • Oils – technical personnel to sort and handle oils according to SEKA AB's directions for collection by SEKA AB.
  • Refrigerants – to be handled by technical personnel. Return used refrigerants to the dealer (KLYLMA) in accordance with their directions and in the return vessels provided.
  • Other waste to be handled according to advice from technicians or the caretaker.
  • There is a container for bulky waste behind Brinellvägen 66. (SUEZ)

Deviations and proposals for improvements regarding the handling of flammable and explosive materials must be reported to the relevant manager for a decision on action. Report deviations, proposals for improvements and compliance with legislation in conjunction with the school's management review of environmental and sustainability work.
