We are excited to report some very important ASHRAE visits in November 2024 and February 2025 to KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Department of Energy Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.

On 19th November 2024 we had a big honor to host ASHRAE President for 2024-2025, Mr. Dennis Knight and Prof. Mahroo Eftekhari, Director and Regional Chair for ASHRAE’s European Region XIV.

This event was co-organized by the ASHRAE Nordic Chapter and the ASHRAE Swedish Student Branch and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Division of Applied Thermodynamics and Refrigeration. This was a significant opportunity for different Swedish branch organizations to discuss current research on HVAC systems and explore potential collaborations with ASHRAE.

The day was fully packed with speakers from KTH , ASHRAE , The Swedish Chapter of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (SWESIAQ) , the Swedish Refrigeration and Heat Pump Association (SKVP) , and the Swedish Refrigeration Association (KYS) . The day was followed by meeting of series of pitch presentations from ASHRAE Swedish PhD student and two lab tours of the KTH Live-In Lab  and the KTH Granryd Laboratory , Division of Applied Thermodynamics and Refrigeration , Department of Energy Technology.

ASHRAE Nordic President Visits to Sweden

On 17th February 2025, the ASHRAE Nordic Chapter President for 2024-2025, Mr. Samir Hernandez was visiting KTH Royal Institute of Technology and ASHRAE Swedish Student Branch to discuss the collaboration opportunities between academia and ASHRAE in the Nordic region as well as role of the Nordic Chapter in ASHRAE Society.

This visit was connected to the technical seminar about the role of heat pumps and natural refrigerant in decarbonization and reduction of energy use in within the residential and industrial sector. The technical seminar was followed by two lab tours of the KTH Live-In Lab and the KTH Granryd Laboratory, Division of Applied Thermodynamics and Refrigeration, Department of Energy Technology. Research at the Division of Applied Thermodynamics and Refrigeration is mainly focused on energy transformations in the built environment. Main research area includes the whole scale from systems studies about energy use, energy storage and energy flows in cities and buildings, to system components, such as heat pumps, refrigerants and heat exchangers.

KTH Live-In Lab offers a full-scale test environment ranging from buildings and installations to housing and management organizations. Research and testing can be carried out in real buildings, which means that not only the product or service itself is evaluated, but also how each component contributes to the performance of the building as a whole. KTH Live-In Lab encompasses a 300 sqm building permit-free innovation environment with alterable student apartments (Testbed KTH), which enables studies on the future's resource-efficient and sustainable student housing. Moreover, KTH Live-In Lab collets property and user data from 305 common student flats owned by Einar Mattsson (Testbed EM) and from the KTH campus education building owned by Akademiska Hus (Testbed AH).
