From Books to MOOCs: Thoughts on the past and future of the university

The university is an old institution, often considered to be established in Bologna, Italy, in 1088. In this talk I will give a personal view on how the modern research university has developed from the different models of the early universities. I will then review the current technology-driven change to higher education that currently is unfolding, and will offer some ideas about the future of the university given this change.
