Your task as the content owner is to create valuable contents for your readers. Here are some instructions on how to plan your content.
When you are developing new contents for the web, or you are redesigning an older page, you need to plan your content. This is a check-list you can download.
When you publish material online, it is important that you keep in mind who you are trying to reach with your message.
These are some of the questions you can ask yourself:
- Who is the page intended for?
- What needs do the users have?
- What should they know and feel after reading this page?
- What are the users intended to do after reading the page; what is the next step?
Link and refer to websites that with additional information on the subject. This can be at KTH or on an external website.
Should the text be available in both Swedish and English? As a government agency, we are obligated to provide certain types of information at least in Swedish. Information directed to both Swedish and non-Swedish-speaking audiences should be made available in both languages.
Remember not to mix languages within the same structure.
A good site structure should be perceived as simple, quick and easy to use. It is important to make it easy to survey, not adding to much information that the users do not need.
Start with browsable and wide at the top of the structure. You can then be more specific further down in the structure.
Publish the same contents in more than one place
Avoid cross-publishing pages simply because they might be useful. Different parts of the website often have different target audiences, and the text may have to be adapted accordingly. The risk of the users ending up in the wrong context once they have located your page also increases when there is cross-publication. It is preferable to write a shorter, adapted version of the text, linking it to a page with more information.
There must be a contact person in charge of all content on the KTH website. The person responsible for content is normally also the person who handles the regular updates, but it is also possible to appoint another person for this task. It is also important to have a backup in the form of a colleague capable of making last-minute changes, for example, during holidays.
Attend to your content
Make a habit of going over your pages regularly. It is important to keep them clean and free of more content than is needed. Pages that are not up-to-date or contain incorrect information must be taken down.
Take down older material
There are legal requirements for public documents to be managed in accordance with our internal regulations (link). On the other hand, there is nothing in the law stating that all this information must be available online. You can therefore take down any old material and refer visitors to the central archives, or to your school's archives for older records/documents etc.
