Expression of interest for assignments as Prefekt EECS

Published Oct 01, 2025

In 2025, the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is carrying out a reorganization with the aim of clarifying the responsibilities and authorities for education and research at each institution. From 1 January 2026, the school will have 14 institutions, all of which will be led by a Prefekt and a deputy Prefekt.

The Prefekt's assignment

The Prefekt is the head of the institution and has staff responsibility for all staff within the institution. The Prefekt is part of the Head of school's management team and reports directly to the Head of school. The management assignment includes leading the institution's activities, having an interest in and insight into; leadership in academia, to work in an academic organisation and to follow KTH's own governing documents together with current statutes and agreements for a government agency.

The Prefekt decides on the institution's affairs, within the framework of the financial resources that the department has at its disposal and manages the department's activities. Furthermore, the assignment includes creating stimulating and competitive environments for research and education and working for a good study and work environment.

What is also included in the Prefekt's assignment is stated in the current Decision and delegation scheme.

Requirements for the Prefekt candidate (parts from KTH's guideline managers and leaders)

The management assignment includes representing KTH and the Prefekt is therefore expected to have

  • Ability to establish activities and collaborations within and outside KTH.

  • Ability to develop and lead one's own operations and staff and at the same time work for KTH as a cohesive university.

  • Knowledge of the prerequisites for the exercise of public authority at a Swedish higher education institution.

  • Good knowledge of current activities and conditions at the new institution.

  • Good collaboration skills at all levels.

  • The ability to exercise leadership and management with respect for the employees and contribute to decisions being made in a way that is characterized by openness, clarity, objectivity and participation.

  • Communicate and act on the basis of the fundamental values, visions and strategies that KTH stands for.

  • Contribute to a more equal KTH by having knowledge about and actively working with equality, diversity and equal opportunities.

The appointment as Prefekt is an assignment and not to be equated with an employment. Thus, the position of Prefekt requires that the person in question is employed at KTH. Normally, an appointment as Prefekt corresponds to four years, but since the reorganization is so extensive, the appointment as Prefekt can initially amount to 1–4 years, which can then be extended.

It is desirable that the gender equality aspect is considered when recruiting the Prefekt and deputy Prefekt, so the ideal is one man and one woman who share the assignment.

It is the head of school who, in consultation with the principal, appoints Prefekts. The Head of School decides to appoint a deputy Prefekt for a limited period of not more than 4 years. The appointment can be extended. The role of Prefekt, including the role of deputy Prefekt, at the school must amount to at least 50% and a maximum of 80% of a full-time position and is paid for by the school, not the department.

Until 10 October 2025, employees who wish to take on the assignment as Prefekt, or nominate a candidate, can contact the Head of School for further dialogue.
