Show an authentic (lab) environment

Sometimes you may not have the opportunity to bring all your students to a particular place. Instead, you can use that specific environment in your video and allow students to participate from home. This can also be resource efficient as you only need to use a particular material once. You can later reuse the recording for several semesters or courses.

Video demonstrations are effective in many ways

When you record a demonstration of a laboration, you only have to do the laboration once. That is why video demonstrations are used to increase the availability of, for example, lab environments, both within academia and outside. With a video, you can:

  • improve cost efficiency
  • increase the sustainability by using less resources
  • perform a demonstration for an unlimited amount of students at once
  • save time the next time you hold the course, by reusing the video.

A video can also be used to show different parts of the lab hall, as well as various machines that students can use when they perform the laboration. It is an opportunity to save time in the lab once the students are on site.

Combine video with actual visits

A video can demonstrate a laboration for the students and expose them to an authentic environment, but it can not give them lab experience or other practical knowledge. You should therefore combine videos with actual visits to the physical enviroment, so the students can try out the laboration and experience it with all their senses. This is required to become familiar with the subject.

Tip! The combination is more effective if you can create coherence between what the students see in the video and what they see in reality. For example, you can start the video by "leading" the students to the lab and then by performing the lab with the same equipment they will use themselves.
