The course web sunset on the first of June
As of the first of June, teachers will no longer be able to edit content in the course web and students will no longer be added. Existing material will remain, but for future course rounds, if you use the course web you will need to choose alternative channels to communicate your material. The recommended channels are the page "Before course selection" in About the course, the course memo (in About the course) and, if needed, a public space in Canvas.
What will happen on the first of June?
On the first of June, students will no longer be added to the course web and teachers will no longer be able to edit the content, but uploaded material will remain. If you use the course web, you need to find an alternative for the next course round, see the next section for tips.
Note! This only affects the course web, not the group web.
Alternatives to the course web
Most teachers can use existing infrastructure as a replacement for the course web, but for those who need more can get a public space in Canvas for, for example, project descriptions or file sharing.
The recommended alternatives are as follows:
- The page "Before course selection" in About the course – information that extends across several course rounds.
- Course memo (in About the course) – information for specific course rounds.
- Public space in Canvas – when the other solutions are not enough.
Note that the public space in Canvas is not googleable (does not appear in search engines), but the other two solutions are. If you use the Canvas space, we recommend that you link there from the page “Before course selection" or course memo and include a description along with your link that explains why people should follow the link.
The page "Before course selection" in About the course – information that spans multiple course rounds
About the course consists of a number of web pages for each course that are published in the course and program catalog. Here you will find comprehensive course information that is open to everyone to view, such as course syllabuses, information about course sessions, course memos, course analyses, and an archive page that collects all historical documentation. The page "Before course selection" in About the course can be edited without updating the official course syllabus, if you are added as an examiner or course responsible, or if you have been given editing permission. Read more on the page Access to About course .
On the page "Before course selection" you can add descriptive text for the course, course structure, recommended prerequisites, and other information. It is recommended that you only edit these fields outside of course selection periods and between course rounds. Each field allows 2000 characters (approximately half an A4 with size 12) and allows some text formatting, such as italics and links.
For more information, read the User manual for the function "The page Before course selection" .
Course memo – information for specific course sessions
The course memo is the overall plan that helps the student prepare and plan for the course, both before the course starts and during the course. The course memo has minimum content requirements, but beyond that it is up to you to decide what information may be needed (see Guideline on course memo ).
The course memo should be available to students no later than the start of the course and it is recommended that you avoid editing it during the course. If the course memo is edited during the course, the students should be informed immediately, unless you are just correcting spelling errors.
KTH has a smooth and flexible tool for creating course memos that has a specific section for describing the course structure. You can also add new headings with associated text boxes if you need to enter more information, and you can easily copy the course memo from the previous course round. For more information, read the page Create and publish a new course memo with the About course template .
Public space in Canvas – when the other solutions are not enough
If your material cannot be moved to The page "Before course selection" or the course memo, you can get a public space in Canvas to complement them, called "About the course resources for [course code]". The spaces have the same target group as the page "Before course selection", that is, mainly external people and potential students, and the same public space is used for all course rounds. Course activities should therefore be carried out in the room that is connected to each course round (the course room), not in this space.
Only modules are published in the Canvas spaces, containing example modules for common areas of use (for example, old exams and projects). You can also create new modules and add files, info pages or other material that you need to share outside the course room.
We are also working on a solution for sharing files and projects on the web, with the goal that the solution is searchable (on google and other search engines) and easy to update for teachers. This solution is in the early stages and is expected to take a few years before it is ready, but we will provide information when the solution is in place!
