The work with RAE 2020 has begun at the school

Published Jan 30, 2020

During the year, KTH's research will be quality audited for the third time in a RAE, Research Assessment Exercise. The division of research fields into panels and the appointment of coordinators for each panel has now been decided. Mats Wilhelmsson is the appointed coordinator for Panel 1, which covers all departments at the ABE school.

A project team and steering group for RAE 2020 was set up in summer 2019. The division of research fields into panels and the appointment of coordinators for them were decided in 2019 . The base unit in the review assessment is an institution and two to six departments form a panel with at least one expert per research field. For the ABE school, all six departments will be grouped into Panel 1.

  • Architecture
  • Civil and Architectural Engineering
  • Philosophy and History
  • Real Estate and Construction Management
  • Sustainable Development, Environmental Science and Engineering
  • Urban Planning and Environment

Each panel consists of approximately eight experts, mainly international, where one will be an expert who took part in the RAE 2012 and one represents industry or the public sector. The steering group appoints the experts based on suggestions from the departments and KTH's management.

Mats Wilhelmsson thinks it is clear that this year's RAE is forward-looking: - Unlike previously conducted RAE, this year's evaluation has a clearer focus on formulating visions and strategies for the future that lead to even higher quality in the research that we are already conducting. Hopefully, the work with the self-evaluations together with the experts' evaluation will give us input on how we can develop and renew our research areas even further.

In brief, RAE 2020 is based on:

  • external peer-review assessment
  • a division of research fields in a number of panels
  • based on institutions as the base unit (3-6 in each panel)
  • centralized data collection to support the schools
  • previous RAE 2012 and RAE 2008
