Crashplan settings for macOS

In order for the Crashplan backup to work on macOS, the client must get full disk access.

Background

For security and privacy reasons, Apple introduced access restrictions for applications starting with macOS 10.14. The consequence of this is that Crashplan cannot back up files from e.g. Contacts, Pictures and Mail until you give Crashplan explicit access to these files.

Recommended solution

Step 1: Grant full disk access to Crashplan.app

  • Open System Preferences

1. macOS before Ventura

  • Open Security and privacy
  • Select the Privacy Protection tab/button
  • If privacy settings are locked:
    • Click on the lock icon at the bottom left
    • Enter your password
  • In the left pane, select Full Disk Access.
  • Click the + icon in the right pane.
  • Navigate to Applications and then CrashPlan.
  • Click Open.
  • The following message appears: "CrashPlan" does not have full disk space until it is terminated.
  • Click Finish Now.

2. macOS Ventura

  • Open Privacy and security
  • Select the Full Disk Access button under Privacy
  • Click the + icon in the right pane.
  • Enter your password in the dialog box with the lock
  • Navigate to Applications and then CrashPlan.
  • Click Open.
  • The following message appears: "CrashPlan" does not have full disk space until it is terminated.
  • Click Quit Now and Reopen

Follow the steps in the next section to restart the Crashplan service. The Crashplan app will not have full disk access until the Crashplan service is restarted.

Step 2: Restart the Crashplan service

There are two ways to restart the service: restart the computer or type a command in the Crashplan App command prompt. Choose the option that is easiest for you.

Option 1

Restart your Mac.

Option 2

  1. Open the Crashplan program.
  2. If necessary, log in to your account.
  3. Press Alt + Command + C to open the Crashplan applicaions command prompt.
  4. Type this command: restart
  5. Press Enter.

This closes the Crashplan app, reauthenticates the Crashplan app with the Crashplan server, and then restarts the Crashplan service. It takes a few minutes.

Now you are done. Check in the app that the backup is active.
