Using Inspera Originality standalone

In certain exceptional cases, for example in thesis courses, there may be reason to use plagiarism checking outside of Canvas. In such cases, you as a teacher can use Inspera Originality as a standalone tool.

Inspera Originality replaces Ouriginal

On October 31, 2025, Ouriginal will be shut down and replaced by the new plagiarism checking tool: Inspera Originality. The change is due to the fact that the provider behind Ouriginal has been acquired and has chosen to discontinue the service.

Just like Ouriginal, Inspera Originality is used to analyze student submissions and generate reports to support your own assessment. The system will be available directly through Canvas, and there will also be an option for independent reviews.

Video tutorial: How to download an Ouriginal report

Before the transition, it’s important that anyone using plagiarism checking does the following:

  • Save reports from Ouriginal. After October 31, you will no longer have access to them. In the linked video, you can see how to do this.
  • Select Inspera Originality for assignments in Canvas. When Ouriginal is discontinued, you will need to manually select Inspera Originality in the settings for your current and future assignments.

When to use Originality standalone

Inspera Originality should primarily be used as an integrated tool within Canvas. However, in some cases, it may be necessary to use Originality outside the Canvas environment. In such cases, the tool can be used in its standalone version.

Originality standalone allows you to manually check documents — for example, reports, theses, or other texts that have not been submitted through a Canvas course. It can be useful for reviewing degree projects, research papers, or other types of documents. The tool can be used by teachers, examiners, and other staff who need to perform a plagiarism check on a text.

How Originality standalone works

The tool works in the same way as it does in Canvas:

  1. Upload your document in the standalone version of Originality. In the upload window, you can choose which settings should apply to your submission.

  2. Wait for the analysis results. Once you’ve uploaded the document, the analysis will start automatically. The process usually takes only a few minutes, depending on the length of the document.

  3. Review the report. When the report is ready, click “Report” to open and review it.
