Using Inspera Originality in Canvas

Inspera Originality can be selected when you create a new assignment in Canvas, or added to an already existing assignment. After the review, the report from Originality will be available directly in Canvas. Here you can read more about how to create an assignment in Canvas with plagiarism checking via Originality.

Inspera Originality replaces Ouriginal

On October 31, 2025, Ouriginal will be shut down and replaced by the new plagiarism checking tool: Inspera Originality. The change is due to the fact that the provider behind Ouriginal has been acquired and has chosen to discontinue the service.

Just like Ouriginal, Inspera Originality is used to analyze student submissions and generate reports to support your own assessment. The system will be available directly through Canvas, and there will also be an option for independent reviews.

Video tutorial: How to download an Ouriginal report

Before the transition, it’s important that anyone using plagiarism checking does the following:

  • Save reports from Ouriginal. After October 31, you will no longer have access to them. In the linked video, you can see how to do this.
  • Select Inspera Originality for assignments in Canvas. When Ouriginal is discontinued, you will need to manually select Inspera Originality in the settings for your current and future assignments.

Recommendations and tips

When you choose to use Originality for plagiarism checking in your Canvas assignment, you will have the option to adjust certain settings. For example, you can decide

  • Whether documents should be archived in Originality. The recommendation is to store documents so that Originality can use them to detect plagiarism at a later stage. If sensitive or confidential material is being checked, these documents should not be stored in Originality.

  • Whether you want to change addictional settings. We recommend that you keep the default settings, as these work well for most assignments.

  • Whether the report should be shown to students. You can choose if or when students will have access to the report. “Never” is the default and the recommendation from KTH. Any setting other than “Never” allows the student to see the report, including viewing and downloading other sources and even other students’ submissions if a similarity exists.

  • Whether the plagiarism review should be anonymous. If the assignment will be assessed anonymously, it is recommended to explain in the assignment description that students should not include their name or personal information in their submissions. Please note that if you set the assignment to anonymous in Canvas, the plagiarism check in Originality will automatically be anonymous as well.

Good to know about more submissions/versions of the same file

New submitted versions of the same file will not be compared against older versions if the document is sent from the same email address or submitted in the same Canvas assignment. As a teacher, you can choose which matches to include or exclude in the analysis report.
