Assignments from abroad

KTH may not employ locally abroad but in some cases there may be openings for taking on assignments from abroad.

About an advisory board in a research project

In some EU projects, there is an advisory board of experts (advisory board members) whose task is to follow up the current project and review so that it is carried out correctly. Normally, these experts do not come to Sweden but they perform the task from their regular workplace. The basis for the assignment is an agreement with each member and there is a budget for this.

An authority that is not a foreign authority cannot locally employ in a country other than Sweden. The question has been asked whether the so-called "advisory board members" can carry out their assignment from abroad without KTH for that purpose having a local employee in another country.

There may be such a possibility provided that:

• It is a question of an assignment and not employment

• The assignment applies to individual and short-term periods

In order for it to be seen as an assignment rather than employment, it is important that the parties (KTH and the advisory board member) in advance agree on an amount (compensation for the assignment). If you have any questions about the amount, contact the finance manager.

About guest lectures in courses and speakers at research seminars from abroad

An authority that is not a foreign authority cannot locally employ in a country other than Sweden. The question has been asked whether it is possible to conduct a guest lecture in a course and hold a research seminar from abroad, without KTH for that purpose having a local employee in another country.

There may be such a possibility provided that:

  • It is a question of an assignment and not employment
  • The assignment applies to individual and short-term periods

In order for it to be seen as an assignment rather than employment, it is important that the parties (KTH and the guest lecturer/seminar holder) in advance agree on an amount (compensation for the assignment). KTH has standardized amounts depending on the assignment. These amounts are SEK 3,000, SEK 6,000 or SEK 9,000.

The assignment should not cover a large part of a course, but it must be a matter of single and short periods. According to this assessment, a person taking on assignments can conduct 1-3 guest lectures per semester and the same number of research seminars.
