Frequently asked questions on "card and code" at KTH

This page is intended for KTH management. Here you’ll find collected answers to common questions about the “Card and Code” project currently being implemented at the university. The project means that you will need to use both your access card and a PIN code to enter KTH’s premises, with the goal of improving safety and security at KTH.

Why did KTH need to introduce both card and code for entry?

The goal is to increase safety at KTH. The “Card and Code” project addresses challenges such as:

  • There have been unauthorised individuals in KTH’s premises who gained access through stolen access cards, creating insecurity for employees and students.
  • Theft of equipment and vandalism in KTH’s buildings have also occurred.
  • The purpose of the “Card and Code” project is to improve safety for employees and students on campus, prevent theft, and create a more secure environment.

What has happened so far?

  • As of 31 December 2025, all KTH properties had card‑and‑PIN access implemented in the perimeter protection. You can find more information about the implementation dates here.
  • Inside the external perimeter protection, there may be additional readers at areas belonging to schools, departments, divisions, centres, or specific groups where access must be restricted. To enter these areas, both card and PIN are required.
  • All students have access through the physical protection to all GRU areas (undergraduate educational areas), as well as to shared spaces and stairwells.
  • All employees have access through the physical protection to shared areas, stairwells, and GRU areas.

What is happening now?

  • Between February and October 2026, local adjustments and adaptations of the implementation are being made in consultation with operational representatives.
  • As part of the project follow‑up, the basic access permissions for the majority of KTH employees have also been completed. Basic access means that, as an employee, you can enter through the external perimeter protection to most of KTH’s buildings.

Certain entrances are excluded from this access—for example, entrance areas that lack an inner perimeter barrier or that lead directly into operational spaces such as workshops, laboratories, and similar environments.

Who do I contact for help with access cards and entry?

  • If you are at Campus Valhallavägen, KTH Entré can help you change your PIN code if needed. They are open Monday to Friday, 08:00–16:30. Bring a valid ID and, if possible, try to plan your visit for a less busy time to avoid queues.
  • If you are at another campus, contact your local service desk.
  • At KTH, the card office normally handles access requests, so you should contact them to gain access to a building. If you are not authorized to request access rights yourself, they can direct you to the appropriate person who can make the request.

I feel the need to remove the card and code requirement on certain doors at my workplace to improve workflow and work environment. Is this possible?

  • The project introducing card and code on campus aims to increase safety and improve the working environment for everyone on campus. If you feel you need adjustments to perform your work satisfactorily, we recommend contacting your immediate manager or another person responsible for the working environment in your workplace.
  • In the future, once the card and code system is fully implemented, adjustments can be made based on local needs.

What happens long-term?

  • Currently there is an administrative debt, meaning that access rights are granted manually. There is also a technical debt, including lifecycle management (for example, of card readers and batteries).
  • For that reason, KTH is now implementing the Serix system. Through Serix, students and employees will automatically receive access to the appropriate groups and facilities. Serix will also allow users to block their own cards or change their PIN codes themselves — something that currently requires a visit to KTH Entré.
  • The goal is that by Autumn Term 2026 (HT 2026), students and employees will automatically have access rights assigned.
  • In the future, KTH will also be able to use new technologies, such as mobile access, alongside the card and code system.
