Physical Security shall prevent harmful effects on areas, buildings, facilities, or objects that contain security sensitive capabilities or activities. Harmful effects can be, for example, the use of explosives or weapons to stop or disrupt security sensitive activities. It also includes protection against anyone, with or without technical means, from gaining unauthorized access to such capabilities or activities.

Security Protection work with focus on Physical Security can be described as a system made up of staff, procedures, building technology and security technology. Together, these aim to create detection, deterrence and managing security measures to prevent unauthorized access and other harmful effects.

Physical Security meets the identified need for security protection that emerges from KTH's Security Protection analysis. More specifically, this means dealing with the vulnerabilities that exist in relation to the level of security sensitive capabilities or activities, identified security threats and the Swedish Security Service's descriptions of dimensioned antagonistic capabilities.
