Personnel Security

Personnel Security in the context of Security Protection aims to ensure that employees, suppliers or partners who have access to security sensitive activities or security protected information are authorized, trusted, and have a need to share security sensitive activities or classified information.

Security clearance and security classification

Security clearance and, where appropriate, security classification, are measures designed to protect sensitive activities and information relevant to Sweden's security . The measures also aim to protect the individual from the threats and risks that access to this type of activity and information may entail.

The purpose of a security clearance is to clarify whether a person can be assumed to be loyal to the interests to be protected in the Security Protection Act, whether the person is reliable from a security point of view and to investigate any vulnerabilities from a security perspective.

Personnel Security in the context of Security Protection consists of two main elements:

  • security clearance
  • security training

The security clearance consists of a basic investigation with or without a register check and, in some cases, an in-depth personal investigation. A security clearance can be carried out without placing the person in a security category. For a person to be placed in a security category, a request for a register check must be sent to the Swedish Security Service. Otherwise, the security clearance is carried out without a request for a register check to the Swedish Security Service.

Decision on the implementation of Security Clearance

It is KTH's Head of Security that makes the decision to carry out a security clearance and assignment to a security class. The basis for invoking the measures that fall under the Security Protection Act regarding personnel security, is that there is a reason for control linked to Sweden's security.
