Updating Mac from older macOS

To secure your Mac and get new features, regular operating system updates are important.
If your Mac is running macOS 11 Big Sur or earlier, an update or replacement is required to get security updates and new features.

Apple supports the three latest macOS versions with security updates and new features, and many applications require specific macOS versions to function properly. In order to keep your Mac safe and gain access to new functions, regular OS updates are therefore important.

KTH follows Apple by supporting the three latest macOS versions:

  1. version 14 (Sonoma)
  2. version 13 (Ventura)
  3. version 12 (Monterey)

To ensure that KTH Backup (Crashplan), MS Office 365 and OneDrive work correctly, your Mac needs to be updated to one of these versions.

If your Mac can only be updated to Monterey and doesn't support newer macOS versions, it may be time to consider a computer hardware upgrade to get access to the latest features and improvements.

Important:

All KTH-owned computers running macOS 11 (Big Sur) or older must be updated to comply with KTH's guidelines on computer security.

What version of macOS is installed?

  • Go under the Apple menu  in the upper left corner of the screen, select About This Mac
  • In the panel that opens, you'll see the name and version of macOS (such as macOS Monterey 12.3 in the image below) as well as the model and year of manufacture of your computer.
  • If your computer is running macOS 11 (Big Sur) or older, it needs to be updated - please note which computer model and year and which version you are running - it can be helpful when you need to update.

Can my computer run a more modern OS?

If you have an older computer, you can check on the following Apple pages which macOS version the computer can run. Latest macOS version is Sonoma (September 2023).

If your computer does not meet the minimum requirements for Monterey, Ventura, or Sonoma, neither of these operating systems can be installed. In that case, it is necessary to replace your current computer with a newer model.
