Guide: Translate captions

You can translate a subtitled/captioned video manually, by downloading the caption file in SRT format from KTH Play, editing it in a separate text editor, and then uploading the translation back to KTH Play again. This page explains all the steps.

Manual translation of a caption/subtitle file

If you want the captions of a video to be available in an additional language, you first need to download the videos SRT-file (SubRip Title) from KTH Play, then manually type in the translation in the SRT-file. The SRT-file contains the captions with the corresponding timestamps and has the file extension ".srt".

You are going to work with a local copy of the SRT-file so you won’t affect the original captions on KTH Play. You can always download a new copy if something goes wrong.

Download the caption/subtitle file KTH Play

To translate the caption/subtitle you first need to download the file from KTH Play.

  1. In KTH Play , choose and navigate to the video you want to translate.

  2. Open the menu “ACTIONS” and select “Edit”.

  3. Select the “Captions” tab.

  4. In the table showing existing captions, click the download icon located under the column “Actions”.

The table consists of the columns “Language”, “Label”, “File type” and “Actions”, with five different icons in the "Actions" column. Swedish captions are available and shown in the table. The file-type is “SRT”. A download icon is located in the “Actions”-column and marked.

Translate with a SRT-supported text editor

When the SRT-file has been downloaded, you need to open it in a text editor with support for saving the file as an SRT. In Windows you can right-click the file and select "Open as", then choose the correct application in the list. We recommend:

  • Mac: Open the file with “TextEdit”.
  • PC: Open the file with “Notepad”.

When the selected app has opened the file:

  1. Manually type the translation at the corresponding timestamps (and delete the original captions). Don’t modify the timestamps. Make sure to save often.
  2. When the translation is finished and saved, go to KTH Play again.

  3. Select the “Captions” tab below the video you want the translation to be attached to.

  4. Click the button “Upload captions file”.

Upload the SRT-file containing the caption translation, by clicking on the button “Upload captions file”. The button is located above the “Actions”-column in the table listing existing language captions.
  5. In the "Upload a captions file" pop-up that opened, select the SRT file with the translation you were working on. Select the correct language in the "Language" drop-down menu. Also enter the language in the "Label" field.

  6. Click on “Save”.
  7. The table with the captions now lists the additional language in a row below the original captions in the table.

Two different languages are now available as captions.

When the video is updated and is being played, you can now select captions in two languages.

Note: Review the video and make sure the translation coincides correctly with the spoken video content. You might need to do some manual corrections of the caption lines in the “Closed Captions Editor“ if the captions doesn’t correspond with the timestamps or if you notice that the translation needs som fine-tuning when you see it in context.
