Remote exams with Zoom

There are several ways to use Zoom when examining. Below is a description of the two approaches that are mainly used at KTH.

Two approaches with zoom during examination

Remote exams with Zoom was developed rapidly in 2020. The method has since been developed to better fit in a digital context in a longer term. Read more about a developed better way for presence in zoom during examination under the heading "Zoom presence during examination". Instructions for implementing the first emergency solution for monitoring with Zoom can be found under the heading "Remotely monitored exams with Zoom".

Zoom presence during examination

The students are present in Zoom during the examination, which enables communication between students and the examiner as well as ID control. The zoom meeting can be used for questions and for short seperat meetings to reduce the risk of the student using unauthorized aids or collaborating during the examination.

Remotely monitored exams in Zoom

It is only permitted to use monitored exams in Zoom at impact level high and after an exemption procedure according to the scenario planning . The remote examination with supervision is an examination the student does in an undistubed location of their own choice at the same time as the student is supervised via Zoom by an exam inviliator to reduce the risk that the student uses unauthorized aids or collaborations during the examination.

Number of Zoom rooms and people

More than 24 students in the same room, the maximum number of students in a room depends on the number of teachers and assistants who can manage to visit students in breakout rooms. A large course has a proportional amount of people working with the course. A meeting host administers Zoom.

Maximum 24 students per room.

Many people/exam invigilators are required without any educational gain. Resources are used less efficiently as all examinees often do not show up and rooms are not used to their full capacity.

Breakout rooms

Breakout rooms are used for checking IDs and for meetings between students and teachers during the exam.

Breakout rooms are used for checking IDs before the exam. This can be difficult to do if students do not show up to the Zoom room well before the start of the exam

Technical difficulties

Any strange occurrence can be followed up with a breakout room meeting.

The exam may be declared invalid.

Breaks

Can be taken after contact with the meeting host, a long absence can be followed up with a breakout room meeting.

Only scheduled breaks.

Experiences regarding examination and zoom

Presence in Zoom contributes most with a good contact between examiner and students. Using zoom for monitoring, however, is less effective as there are many ways to bypass a digital inviligator. However, it is used at several universities around the world as it is judged to work so well that the solution can be used for emergency replacement of campus-based exams. Zoom monitoring is also experienced as stressful for the student, "Should the technology work?" is not something the student should focus on before an exam, it is enough to worry about whether the student has sufficient knowledge in the subject for the exam. Zoom monitoring should therefore be used extremely sparingly.

Examination in a course requires at least one occasion when the student's identity can be secured. This can be done by having such a small group that you get to know your students through lectures and assignments during the course. Or in the case of a slightly larger group, this can be done by conducting oral examinations. For groups around 100 people and more, however, this can be too time-consuming and then examination with zoom presence may be a relevant alternative.

The remote examination with zoom presence is a combination of home examination and making it possible to ask oral questions, in such a way that examination wording that fit in a classic examiantion can be used in a larger group. It is also less sensitive to, for example, bad internet connection, toilet breaks and it is using resources in a more efficient way than zoom monitoring.

Help with arranging examination with zoom

Zoom monitoring approved by your school means that you get more help with the organization of the exam
You will be assigned a person responsible for zoom who will help you set up the zoom room as well as exam inviligators / meeting hosts and support from funka etc. Read more about what each role should do on the pages under the different ways of examining with zoom, with zoom presence  or zoom monitoring during digital exams .

If you wish to conduct a zoom attendance without approval from the school, you must fill these roles yourself, use the above mentioned pages to check that no part before the exam is missed.
