New requirements for real estate agents and extensive intelligence operations in Sweden

From the Faculty Board Meeting 12 June 2025

Published Jun 17, 2025

At the semester's final faculty board meeting, a decision was made regarding a new committee for impact issues, a possible new commissioned education programme for real estate agents was discussed, and KTH's deputy security protection chief provided a current picture of the security situation.

Over three semesters, the work in the faculty board has developed and now recurring issues are handled in committees for employment and docent matters, which provides more time for strategic discussions.

“They work very well, we in the board receive excellent background materials and recommendations from the committees,” says Per Wikman Svahn , member of the faculty board. “In some cases we have questions and discuss matters, but since the committee meetings take place some time before the faculty board meetings, we have the opportunity to straighten out any question marks. It's a well-functioning routine.”

During Thursday's meeting, a decision was also made to establish a committee to organise questions about impact at the school.

Inga-Lill Söderberg , head of the Department of Real Estate and Construction Management, participated in the meeting and reported that new regulations from The Swedish Estate Agents Inspectorate mean that from 1 January 2028, a degree from a three-year bachelor's program, which must contain certain specific courses, will be required if you want to use the title real estate agent.

“This will increase the need for education and we discussed how the ABE school should be able to meet increased demand. It would be good if we could offer a three-year commissioned education program adapted for real estate brokerage and management.”

The Faculty Board was also visited by Thom Thavenius , deputy security protection chief at KTH, to inform about current security issues. One of the Security and Safety Department's tasks is to raise awareness about these issues, and Thom Thavenius spoke about, among other things, foreign states' intelligence work in Sweden, which is relatively extensive.

During the fall, Johan Spross  will serve as acting vice chairman of the board while Pernilla Hagbert  will be on parental leave.

The faculty board concluded the spring semester's final meeting with a joint dinner for the members.

The next faculty board meeting will be Thursday, August 28.
