Expand the storage space for files in KTH's computer rooms
Some software can generate large work files, larger than the space students have available on the file server by default. As a course coordinator or teacher on a course, you can order expanded storage space in KTH's computer rooms for your students.
Personal storage space on the file server
All students logged on to a computer in a computer room are assigned a limited space to save their own files. The saving space is named differently depending on the operating system: for KTH Windows the storage space is called "home directory (H:)" while for KTH Mac and KTH Ubuntu it is called "AFS home directory" .
The file server size is
- 3 GB for KTH Windows
- 3 GB for KTH Mac and KTH Ubuntu.
Some software, such as video editing or simulation software, can create large work files that do not fit in the user's home directory (H :) or AFS home directory. In those cases, you as a teacher or course coordinator need to order expanded workspace for save files.
The difference between KTH Windows and KTH Ubuntu or KTH Mac
You as a teacher or course coordinator can order expanded workspace regardless of the operating system on the computer, with one important difference: for KTH Windows you order a common file area in KTH Windows’ so-called Project Catalog (P:), while for KTH Ubuntu and KTH Mac, you order an expanded AFS home directory for each individual student who needs to save large files.
Students in student computer rooms with KTH Windows can thus work together in the same folder, for example for group projects.
For student computer rooms with KTH Mac and KTH Ubuntu, there is no common file area (project catalogs) for students to order, only individual expanded space.
Ordering expanded work space
Only those responsible or teachers on the course can order a project catalog (KTH Windows) or an expanded AFS home directory (KTH Mac/KTH Ubuntu).
To place an order, send an e-mail as responsible or as a teacher to KTH IT-Support with the following information:
- Desired name of the folder
- Responsible person (KTH username)
- Which students will work in the folder (KTH username)
KTH Windows home directory (H:) and project area (P:) via the web
If you are outside KTH's network with your computer, you cannot access Windows file directories for security reasons. Students and employees instead access their Windows home directory (H:) or project area (P:) via a web browser. To use it, go to your Windows home directory on the web (home.ug.kth.se) .
