Account settings

You can access your account through the global menu and change settings that apply only for you. Your profile, contact information and the language in Canvas, and different feature options.

Your profile is how you are perceived

Each time you upload or write something in Canvas, your name and profile picture are linked to it. If anyone clicks on your name, they will end up at your profile. This is a great opportunity to let those that click on your profile get to know you better.

How to access your profile:

  1. Click on "Account" in the global menu.
  2. Choose "Profile".

In your profile you can change your profile picture, write an introduction and add links. E-learning recommends that you as a teacher upload a picture of yourself and write an introduction on your profile. Try giving your students an idea of who you are as a person. You could also add a link to the department where you work or something else that the students might find interesting.

You update your profile picture by pressing the image and choosing a new one. Be sure to check how the image is cropped since the image has to be round, and don’t forget to save.

Canvas has a guide on how to add a profile picture to your account (community.canvaslms.com) .

Your biography is where you write about yourself. The text editor is simple and can only handle plain text. Avoid putting links there, instead put them under the "Links" section below "Biography".

You can also recommend that your students fill in their profiles to make the use of Canvas more personal.

Personal settings and options

Under “Account” you will find “Settings” that lead to your personal settings in Canvas. Here you can edit:

  • language
  • time zone
  • ways to contact
  • feature options.

Important! If you want to change other settings than those in the list, you need to contact IT at it-support@kth.se .

Canvas communication with you: language and ways to contact

You can choose language in Canvas by clicking “Edit settings” in the sidebar and choosing the language that you want to use in the drop-down menu next to “Language”. There are two important things to remember when it comes to language in Canvas:

  1. There is a delay of about ten seconds before the language is updated. If you reload the page immediately after you have changed the language, Canvas will still use the old language. Wait and reload the page.
  2. The language setting applies to Canvas’ global menu and course menus in courses with unspecified language, i.e., the language is set to “Not set”. Content created by, for example, teachers or students will not be translated.

At the top of the sidebar are two lists of your ways to contact, which is the email and phone number that Canvas can contact you through. You can press the “+ Email address” or “+ Contact method” to add a new email address or mobile phone number. If you wish to delete something that you have added, press the trash can icon next to contact methods.

Feature options

Feature options is a list of alternatives for different functions spread across Canvas. They do not appear in a specific order, but here they are grouped according to what they change.

Change Canvas appearance

  • High resolution user interface with increased colour contrast on text, buttons etc. Only applies to menus and text created by Canvas.
  • Underlined links in navigation menus, overview and sidebars, just like for user-created links.

Disable functions

  • Disable timeout for “alert notifications”. They will no longer disappear after a certain time and must be closed manually.
  • Disable congratulation animations, which otherwise are shown when submitting assignments.
  • Disable keyboard shortcuts, which could be annoying for those that use a screen reader or keyboard navigation.

Export of spreadsheets

  • Include “Byte-Order Marks”.
  • Use semicolons to separate fields, instead of commas.
  • Automatically identify field separators.
