The Outcomes function in Canvas
With the function “Outcomes”, you can track your students’ progress in the course and the students can see their own progress regarding the intended learning outcomes of the course. To get the best overview, you should activate the Learning Mastery Gradebook, both for students and for teachers. Outcomes are also integrated in SpeedGrader if they are linked to an assignment with a rubric.
How to use outcomes
You can use the function to add the course’s learning objectives and goal-related grading criteria, and then link them to assignments or quizzes in Canvas. It gives you a way to follow your students’ mastery of different outcomes through the graded activities in the course. The function supports both formative and summative assessment.
Note! On these pages, we use "outcomes" to describe the Canvas function, not the intended learning outcomes found in the syllabus. The intended learning outcomes in the syllabus can, however, be copied into the Canvas function "outcomes".
Creating outcomes
This guide shows you how to find and create outcomes in Canvas, from how to name them to how you set limits and choose a calculation method. Once you have created outcomes, they can be reused within and between course offerings.
Prepare for assessment using outcomes
This step-by-step guide explains how you link outcomes to assignments in Canvas through a rubric, with settings adapted to your course and area of use. The guide also covers common issues that may arise and how to handle them.

Grading with outcomes in SpeedGrader
To assess an assignment with outcomes, you open the assignment in SpeedGrader and fill in the linked rubric. Here it is explained how to find and use the rubric effectively in SpeedGrader.

Learning mastery gradebook for both teachers and students
Both teachers and students can get access to an overview of assessments and mastery for different outcomes, if these views are activated in the course. The gradebook for teachers uses the same four levels of mastery to present the gradebook in a clear way. There is also an outcomes results report per student for more detailed information.

Using outcomes to assess with partial points
If you want to assess an assignment with partial points, the Canvas function “Outcomes” can be used to document and compile the results. You create outcomes for each sub-task, link the outcomes to the Canvas assignment and assess using rubrics in SpeedGrader. The results are compiled in or outside Canvas depending on the complexity of the compilation.
