Newsmail #60, 2023-05-30

Dear all,

We will make a small change in organizing and supporting BSc and MSc education at MMK. Since the beginning of MMK, we have had a director of study (studierektor) who coordinates our educational efforts. Starting July 1st, we will divide this role into two roles. One role focuses on the administrative aspects of education, and, the other role focuses on the development of our activities.

Daniel Frede, from the Mechatronics group, is our new director of studies starting July 1st. Daniel will be the main interface between us and all administrative parts of KTH supporting education. Daniel will coordinate scheduling activities, delivery of course plans etc. Daniel will represent MMK in all discussions with the student office and make sure our interests are supported. Daniel will be a member of the MMK mgmt. group and will chair coordination meetings at MMK relating to education.

Gunilla Ölundh Sandström, our former director of studies, will have a new role as our pedagogical developer. Gunilla will run development projects, specified by the MMK mgmt. group, which MMK needs and supports. Examples of development projects include the current plan of developing Major/Minor-tracks within our existing MSc programs/tracks. Other projects can be the development of new MSc programs, and new ambitions regarding MMK overarching courses and projects.

Besides the two above roles, we have “MSc track leaders”. While MSc program directors are appointed by the ITM school, and represent the MSc program towards the ITM mgmt., MMK appoints track leaders that coordinate our MSc tracks. We have four tracks and four track leaders. In this small organizational change, I want to ensure we have less overlap between responsibilities and clear roles.

We will put this in official writing, but the purpose of this newsmail is to open up a possibility to react before the decision is made. The decision will be put into writing on June 14.

In summary:

Director of study: responsible for coordinating the delivery of our courses, for all coordination between MMK and GRU admin. Reports to the head of department.

Pedagogical developer: responsible for specific development projects, as specified by the MMK mgmt. group. Reports to the MMK mgmt. group.

MSc track leaders: responsible for the quality and development of our four tracks. Reports to the unit manager.

I also want to note that we also intend to look into the roles and responsibilities of our physical environments and lab support for education, HK corridor, MSc thesis student offices etc. I’ll come back to this further on.

Best,

Martin
