In case of theft, break-in, or vandalism

How should I, as an employee at KTH, act if I discover theft, a break-in, or vandalism?

In the event of theft, a break-in, or if you discover vandalism, it is important to act quickly to minimise damage and ensure that all necessary actions are taken. If a crime is in progress or if you suspect that the perpetrator is on-site or has been recently, you should first alert emergency services using 112.

Immediate actions:

  1. Call KTH's emergency number 08-790 77 00 to report the incident. Be prepared to provide the following information:
    • Your name
    • Which building, school, or department you belong to
    • What happened (e.g., theft, break-in, or vandalism)
    • Where it occurred
    • If you have any observations about the perpetrator (if you saw anyone or have suspicions)
  1. Secure the area: Try not to touch any potential evidence, such as discarded items or damaged areas. This may be important for a possible police investigation. If possible, cordon off the area or inform others nearby to stay away from the site.
  2. Document the damage: Take photos of the damage and document as best as you can any stolen or damaged items, e.g., through receipts, existing photographs, or inventory records. If this is not possible, you should write down as many details as possible about the item that was damaged or stolen. This may be of importance for insurance claims and police investigations.
  3. File a police report: You can file a police report by calling the police's non-emergency number, 114 14. You can also file a report online here .
  4. Inform your immediate supervisor or someone with personnel responsibilities: If you feel the need for support, such as dealing with the event through occupational health services (företagshälsovården) or with the police- or insurance report, someone with personnel responsibility can ensure the right people are contacted.

Insurance and damage: If it involves theft or vandalism that affects equipment or property, KTH’s insurance may cover the losses. Here  you find guidance on what is covered and what actions need to be taken.

To report an insurance claim or get information on what type of coverage applies to your specific case, contact the insurance officer at the Safety and Security Department.

In case of theft or vandalism of IT equipment: If equipment such as a laptop, mobile phone, or other electronic device has been stolen or damaged, it is important to:

• Report the incident to KTH’s IT support. The IT department can help block the device if it is connected to KTH’s network or systems. More information and instructions on how to report a loss can be found here .

• Observe own security measures: In the event of theft of IT equipment, it may be necessary to reset passwords and accounts to protect sensitive information.
