What does the research say about digital game-based learning (DGBL)? How can AI-driven personalisation, feedback and assessment be integrated into the game to support learning? McLaren and doctoral student Elias Hedling discuss what the research says about game-based learning with Joakim Lilliesköld, deputy programme director for the Future Education programme, and Marcus Lithander, host of the Fika chat podcast. Marcus holds a PhD in cognitive psychology.
Bruce M. McLaren is a Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, head of the McLearn Lab, and past President of the International Artificial Intelligence in Education Society (2017-2019). McLaren is passionate about how technology can support education and has dedicated his work and research to projects that explore how students can learn with digital learning games (also called educational games), intelligent tutoring systems, e-learning principles, and collaborative learning.
Elias Hedling is a newly enrolled doctoral student at the Department of Media Technology and Interaction Design within the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). He is involved in the READ project, which focuses on improving children’s reading skills using human-centered AI. The overall idea is to develop AI-based reading tutors where children read aloud and receive personalised feedback, while teachers get insights into their progress. More generally, Elias is interested in, and have worked previously on problems relating to, how AI systems interpret and use information, and how that affects the way they interact with people.

Status regarding the Google Cloud licence (6 March 2026)
Right now (March), IT is working on setting up the technical infrastructure so KTH groups can access the environment. After that, KTH groups that want to use Google Cloud services will be able to do so if a project code is linked to the user group so that all costs can be billed directly to the group. Users are responsible for learning how to use Google Cloud services, as there is currently no budget for support at KTH for this.

KTH admits students in different selection groups, the most common of which are via upper secondary school grades or via results of the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test. As an authority, KTH does not have much freedom to change the rules for this. The Stockholm School of Economics is a privately owned university and therefore has greater freedom to design its admission rules. They are now going to utilise this by setting different requirements for student applicants, which Lars talks about in this episode.

. For this work, he was awarded KTH's pedagogical prize 2023. The course has several features that makes it unique in its kind, including combining theory and practice in a framework in a pedagogical and useful way that is appreciated by the students.
