KTH Virtual Server

Information about the "KTH Virtual Server (KVS)" service. The service is available to employees at KTH.

Description

KVS provides virtualization services to all of KTH. The service is not intended for commercial or personal use. The goals for KVS is to reduce electricity consumption, minimize the number of server rooms at KTH and utilize purchased hardware as much as possible. The costs of the services offered within KVS are therefore subsidized. Large savings can be made by reducing costs for purchasing server hardware and disk, and reducing the need for time to set up hardware in server rooms.

Extent

All servers are created in a KVS server network, your own server network can be installed at a cost.
Backup is included, this is done at least once a day, or according to agreement.

KVS service description

A minimum basic server in KVS consists of the following components, including price. This configuration is always the basis and can of course be expanded.

  • 1 vCPU 1 core/1 GB RAM/50 GB storage on disk. Basic Support and backup are included.
  • Original configuration of memory/CPU can be changed. This is done by making an order for change to it-support@kth.se. Note: most OS:es require a reboot for the change to be activated.
  • Storage space can only be expanded, not reduced.

The KVS operations teams have the right to restrict virtual instances that use the resources excessively, primarily CPU and storage.

KVS Bas (Virtual Private Server)

  • Is intended for researchers/systems administrators/systems group who need an easy-to-manage environment where you do not have to take as much responsibility for the underlying components.
  • VM administration is done through SSH or RDP.
  • Installation services are performed by the KVS operations team.
  • There are no traffic charges for KVS services, which separates it from similar services.
  • KVS base is the most basic configuration in terms of resources.
  • KVS base is only for production systems (reference environments are counted as production).

KVS Full

  • Is only intended for a systems group*) that wants to replace its existing servers with a virtual environment
  • KVS full gives access to the vSphere client where you can perform all possible operations with your virtual machines
  • All login to vSphere is done through 2-factor authentication.
  • KVS Full allows the VM owner to change network settings, on/off/restart of the VM and console. You see your own networks.
  • Installation services are performed by KVS operations team.
  • There are no traffic charges for KVS services, which separates it from similar services.
  • KVS Full is based on KVS Base. Additional services are in this case the vSphere client and the security solution.
  • KVS base is only for production systems (reference environments are counted as production).

*) System group can be ITA /ICT or equivalent.

Additional services

  • Monitoring of Windows instances
  • Monitoring of Linux instances
  • Licences for Windows / RHEL can be managed by KVS operations team if desired.
  • You can change resources of e.g. extension of memory for 1 month. These changes are charged per month. Rebooting may be required for the change to take place.
  • vGPU. Price according to special agreement

Debiting

The agreement is ongoing and can be terminated with a 1 month notice period. Price for KVS Base configuration is SEK 200 / month.
